Kaduna House of Assembly repeals law establishing Zaria and Kafanchan authorities

The Kaduna State House of Assembly on Wednesday repealed the law establishing the Zaria Metropolitan Authority.

Parliament also repealed the laws that established the Kafanchan Municipal Authority and the Kaduna Capital Territory Authority in 2021.

Speaker of the Assembly, Dahiru Liman, passed a bill seeking to repeal the law after the Chairman, Joint Committee on the three authorities law and judicial law submitted its report to the House.

The House also repealed the law establishing the Fire and Public Safety Act No. 20 of 2018 and enacted the Kaduna State Fire and Public Safety Act of 2024.

The law was passed after the chairman of the Joint Committee on Security, Intelligence and Judiciary, Munirat Suleiman, delivered a report on the draft law at a plenary session.

Speaking after the plenary session, chairman of the joint committee of the Zaria Metropolitan Authority and the judiciary, Mahmud Lawal, said the repeal of the law was necessary.

He said: “With the recent ruling of the Supreme Court and reviewing the provisions of our constitution that govern the functions of local government in Nigeria.

“We have become aware that the existence of a city government is impossible if we look at the function of the regional government.

“There are many city government activities that according to the law should be carried out by the regional government.”
