US Vice President Kamala Harris raised a record $81 million for her presidential bid in the first 24 hours after President Biden announced he would not run again and then endorsed her.
According to the Harris campaign, more than 880,000 donors have contributed to Harris’s campaign, the Democratic National Committee and joint fundraising committees.
“The historic outpouring of support for Vice President Harris represents exactly the kind of grassroots energy and enthusiasm that wins elections,” Harris campaign spokesman Kevin Munoz said in a statement. “We are already seeing a broad and diverse coalition coming together to support our critical work of speaking to the voters who will decide this election.”
Munoz added that “Donald Trump is terrified because he knows his divisive and unpopular agenda cannot hold a candle to the vice president’s record and vision for the American people.”
This is the highest amount recorded in 24 hours by either side in the 2024 campaign.
The money raised for the Biden-Harris ticket has been transferred to Harris’s new presidential campaign. The ticket had raised $296 million as of June 30, according to the Federal Election Commission, while Trump had raised $221 million.
Speaking to campaign staffers in Wilmington, Delaware, Harris acknowledged the “roller coaster” of the past few weeks but expressed confidence in her new campaign team.
“It’s my intention to go ahead and earn this nomination and win,” he said.
He promised to “unite our Democratic Party, unite our nation, and win this election.”
