A member of the House of Representatives, Ibrahim Mohammed, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing the ongoing leadership dispute and internal divisions in his former party.
Mohammed, who represents Birnin Kebbi, Kalgo and Bunza Federal Constituencies in Kebbi State, announced his decision in a statement on Tuesday, describing the PDP as overwhelmed with unresolved crises that hamper its effectiveness.
“Continuous leadership crises and internal conflicts within the party have made it difficult for committed members like me to make meaningful contributions to democratic growth and responsibility,” he said.
He further explained that his decision was taken after extensive engagement with his constituents and political allies across the constituency.
“After extensive consultation with constituents and key stakeholders, I decided to join the All Progressives Congress in the best interests of my people and to enhance my capacity to provide effective representation,” he said.
The MP confirmed that he had officially informed his ward administrator in Nasarawa Ward I, Birnin Kebbi, of his resignation from the PDP, and had also informed the leadership of the House of Representatives of his defection.

Mohammed’s move is part of a pattern of high profile exits from the PDP in Kebbi and other parts of the country, highlighting growing concerns over instability within the opposition party.
In Kebbi State, internal tensions have recently been further exacerbated by the resignation of the party’s State Secretary, Abubakar Bawa Kalgo, adding to concerns about the party’s cohesion and direction.
Political observers note that factional infighting and court battles over leadership positions have weakened trust among party members, prompting some elected officials to seek new political alignments.
Meanwhile, the APC continues to strengthen its foothold in Kebbi State, and Mohammed’s defection is expected to increase its presence in the National Assembly.
As the 2027 general election approaches, analysts warn that more defections could occur if the PDP fails to resolve its internal challenges and unite its ranks.
