Benin Republic coach Gernot Rohr says his side will go into tomorrow’s AFCON 2025 qualifier against Nigeria’s Super Eagles at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo full of confidence, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.
Rohr managed Nigeria’s senior national team for a period of almost seven years before his shock exit just weeks after the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, which was delayed and was due to be held in Cameroon in 2022.
Three months ago he led the Nigerian neighbours to their first ever win over Nigeria and yesterday, arriving in Uyo, a city he knows well, the coach said he will be excited to reunite with his former players but above all he is hoping for a victory.
“It will be good to meet my boys in the Super Eagles. The team has not changed much since the one I left two years ago so technically they are still my boys but we will put all that aside on the pitch on Saturday,” Rohr told OwnGoalNigeria.com.
“Nigeria have players in big teams unlike my national team, but we have shown three months ago that we can beat any team. That is what we expect against the Super Eagles, although we know it will be difficult because they are playing at home.”
