Kogi government extends tenure of 21 interim local government chairmen by six months

The Kogi State House of Assembly on Friday approved the extension of the tenure of 21 local government area transition committee chairmen in the state by six months.

This follows a request by Governor Usman Ododo for the Assembly to approve an extension of the term of office of the chairmen.

The interim chairman’s term is expected to end on July 8.

Ododo in his letter to the Assembly said the state could not hold local government elections at this time due to lack of funds.

He hopes that before the extension of the term of office ends on January 8, 2025, the Regional Government will have successfully held regional elections.

DPR Speaker Umar Yusuf, who read the governor’s letter, asked for input from DPR members,

The lawmakers in turn unanimously granted the governor’s request.

Yusuf praised his colleagues for being willing to understand the governor’s intentions, which he said meant well for the growth and development of the state.

The DPR Speaker then announced the DPR’s approval for a six-month term extension for the speakers.

β€œBy this resolution today, July 5, 2024, the state assembly has extended the term of office of the chairman of the transition committee for another six months,” he said.
