Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, on Saturday, appealed to Nigerians to be patient and support the government, despite growing frustration with poor governance.
Kwankwaso, in a press statement, acknowledged the resonance of the recent calls for protest, but warned against the potential consequences of such actions.
The elder statesman stressed the importance of putting the nation’s interests first and channeling energy into peaceful means of transformation, such as the vote.
He warned that the protests could escalate into violence, resulting in loss of life, destruction of property and widespread chaos, citing tragic events in the past.
The statement read in part, “Today, I speak to you not just as an elder and a concerned citizen, but as someone who believes deeply in the strength and potential of our great country. The recent calls for protest against poor governance resonate with me, because they reflect our collective frustration and yearning for a better Nigeria.
“However, I urge Nigerians to put our country before any other consideration by being patient with the government and giving it all the support it needs to succeed. If any government fails to provide the leadership needed for a better Nigeria, we will have the opportunity as citizens to elect people who can bring about the needed change by using our votes.

“In these trying times, our country stands at a crossroads. Our collective frustration with poor governance has reached a boiling point, and the urge to protest is growing stronger. As an older and patriotic Nigerian, I share your concerns and desire for change. However, I urge you to consider the ramifications of a nationwide protest and channel your energies into a more effective and peaceful means of transformation—through the power of your voice.
“Protest, while a fundamental democratic right, often comes with unforeseen and dire consequences. Tragic events in the past have shown us that protests can escalate into violence, resulting in loss of life, property damage, and widespread chaos. The impact of such actions extends far beyond the immediate moment, leaving scars on our society and deepening divisions among us.”
His call for caution could be seen as an attempt to prevent escalating tensions and encourage a more constructive approach to pushing for change.
However, some may find Kwankwaso’s stance too cautious, given the urgency of the situation. The call for protests reflects a strong desire for change, and some may argue that more drastic action is needed to bring about meaningful reform.
Ultimately, Kwankwaso’s statement highlights the complex dynamics at play in Nigeria’s struggle for better governance.
As the country goes through this critical period, it remains to be seen whether his call for patience and peaceful transformation will be accepted by the people.
