Kwara government seals 14 buildings for environmental violations

The Kwara government has sealed 14 buildings over environmental concerns, as announced by the state Commissioner for Environment, Hajia Nafisat Musa-Buge, on Thursday.

Speaking to journalists in Ilorin, Musa-Buge explained that the action was taken in response to the dirty environment surrounding the buildings, which he believed could pose a danger to the public.

“This is necessary to reaffirm the government’s commitment to maintaining a hygienic and safe environment,” he said.

On Wednesday, officials sealed eight buildings in Sabo-Oke area of Ilorin South Local Government, while last week, six buildings were sealed on Onikun-Kewu Road in Adabata area.

Musa-Buge noted that the buildings violated the state’s environmental laws, and the closure was aimed at preventing the outbreak of cholera and other diseases. He stressed the government’s dedication to ensuring a clean and safe environment for residents and potential investors.

“It is no longer new that Environmental Health Officers in 16 local governments have started enforcing environmental laws,” he said. “This is mainly through house-to-house inspections of toilet facilities to safeguard the health of residents. This initiative has started yielding positive results.”

Despite ongoing advocacy to stop open defecation and the construction of standard toilets, Musa-Buge pointed out that some properties still discharge human waste into the environment due to improper disposal systems. “However, this practice is harmful to the living conditions of residents in the area,” he said.

The commissioner assured the public that house-to-house inspections will be conducted to assess compliance and enforce environmental laws. He urged residents to support the government’s efforts to promote a clean and safe living environment for all. He also called on landlords to build proper toilet facilities, warning that those who fail to comply will face legal action.
