The presentation of a 30 kilometer segment of the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway as a completed and inauguration project has attracted clear criticisms of Nefgad, one of the main defense groups of public procurement in Nigeria.
In a declaration signed on the weekend by the office head of his country, Akingunola Omoniyi, Nefgad said he had noticed with profound concerns that the Lagos-Calabar coastal motorway was a contract without a course of 750 kilometers, destined to serve as an infrastructure corridor transformative throughout the coastal region of Nigeria.
“To inaugurate only 30 kilometers, even 4% of the total duration of the project, while the rest remains under construction is premature and misleading.
“We warn the politicalization of the delivery of the infrastructures and the stress that the inauguration of the project should reflect the substantial completion and usability of the project in its entirety or at least an important functional section.
“Presenting a fraction overall not only misrepresented the scope of work, but the risks undermine public trust in the communication and performance metrics of the government,” said the organization.
The organization urged the Minister of Labor, David Umahi to be aware of the type of previous one, this set of actions, insisting on the fact that: “If left uncontrolled, this could normalize the inauguration of incomplete or partially completed projects throughout the country, which abandon themselves to what should be moments of national progress in mere photographic opportunities and political theater”.
The group stated that the president should not be put under pressure to inaugurate unfinished projects, claiming that the government was a continuous one.
He said that Umahi should know that it was not possible for an administration to finish the government activity to the extent that all the projects started should be completed during a mandate.
He said that President Tinubu himself met projects launched by previous administrations, completed and inaugurated.
Nefgad invited President Bola Tinubu to request transparency and responsibility in the delivery of the project, observing that people deserved full value for each public infrastructure initiative, did not stage ceremonies that transmitted incomplete work.
“We urge the Ministry of Works to recommend credible goals, support the integrity of the project and ensure that future commissions are linked to real and completed results, not fragments dressed in finished products”, insisted on the declaration.
