The Lagos state government has introduced new certification and training initiatives for construction craftsmen in a brave step to curb development problems that have been going on for a long time in the city.
This scheme, called the CSIP Structural Integrated Program (CSI), was launched by the Labos Laboratory of Lagos Material Testing (LSMTL) during the stakeholder forum held in Ese-off and Badagry.
Block Molders, Bricklayers, Las, Steel Assemblies, and Concrete Mixers gathered at the event to support government calls for safer construction practices.
In a statement on Thursday, the General Manager of the LSMTL, Olayinka Abdul, described the initiative as a decisive intervention on tragedies associated with building materials below the standard.
“Without craftsmen, there is no construction. But with you, we have the power to ensure that every construction is safe, healthy, and safe. We need to really curb the collapse episode in a high water-prone community, and we don’t want to be like that in your community. It ends today,” Abdul said.
According to the government, CSIs will run as a five -year assessment program, certify suitable construction materials for use. This will also result in a verified directory of the molders block, concrete mixer, and steel assemblers – professional developers will be mandated to protect.
“This is not only about enforcement; this is about partnerships and empowerment. Together, we can falsify alliances that cannot be solved which makes lagos models to build safety and integrity,” Abdul added.

Technical experts in the forum underline science behind this program. Director of Land and Geotechnical Unit, Engr. Abimbola Adebayo, emphasized the importance of mandatory soil tests before the construction work began. Likewise, the Akinfeleye Kayode from the Technical Service Department warned the builders to always secure and preserve architectural images, describing them as “Core Requirements in the Lagos Development Process.”
The craftsmen welcomed this initiative. The Chairperson of the National Association of Block Molders of Nigeria, Alhaji Fabiyi Oyeleke, called Recurring collapsed “disappointing” and praised the forum as a positive step. Chairman of the Lagos State Bricklayers Association, Mr. Fashina Aro, quoting the state of the state of the state as a challenge and urged the builder to ensure the land and material tests were carried out before putting bricks in any location.
The problem of the collapse of the building has interrupted lagos for decades, leaving the victim and the loss of the property behind him. Reports by the building prevention guild showed that Lagos itself contributed nearly 55% of all incidents of building collapse recorded in Nigeria.
The new disaster has seen that emergency respondents attract people who survived the debris, triggering new pressure on the state government to act. The authorities said the certification scheme would complement the efforts of the Regulatory Agency such as the Lagos State Building Control Agency, which had been strengthened to enforce standards and monitor compliance.
