Lagos Red Line Train begins partial operations today with free travel

The Lagos Mass Rapid Transit Red Line will begin partial operations today, Wednesday, August 28, according to a statement by Kolawole Ojelabi, spokesperson for the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA).

The train will offer free rides for passengers, with four trips daily between Oyingbo and Agbado. The milestone marks the culmination of six weeks of successful planning, training and testing.

The Red Line, part of the Lagos Strategic Transport Master Plan, connects Lagos to Ogun State, serving workers and business owners living in Ogun. During partial operation, the system will interact with non-fare-paying passengers to gather feedback before commercial operations commence.

“Starting Wednesday, August 28, the Red Line system will interact with non-fare-paying passengers in organized groups to gather feedback before the start of commercial operations.

“The partial operation, similar to what was done during the Blue Line trial phase, is a major step forward in realizing the Lagos State Government’s vision of a modern, efficient, integrated and sustainable transport system.

“The first phase of the Red Line, a 27-kilometre railway line from Agbado to Oyingbo, will provide a reliable and affordable transport option for workers, reduce traffic congestion and improve the quality of life for Lagosians,” Ojelabi said.
