The Lagos State Government on Wednesday appealed to the public to remain calm over the massive flooding that has hit various parts of the state.
This follows heavy rain that lasted for more than nine hours on Wednesday.
The state Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, who made the appeal in a statement in Lagos, noted that the flash flood affecting Iyana-Oworo linking the Third Mainland Bridge and some other areas would recede once the rains ease and the water level of the Lagos lagoon recedes.
The statement read: “Lagos has experienced about nine hours of non-stop rain since early Wednesday.
“This is coupled with the high rainfall that has been occurring in the area every day since last week which has resulted in rising water levels in the Lagos lagoon.”
The commissioner said the state government had deployed officials from the Emergency Flood Management Group to major hotspots including Iyana-Oworo which had been cleared of all blockages.
He appealed to all residents in lowland areas to immediately move to highlands now to save lives and property.
Wahab also appealed to residents not to drive through the floodwaters with their vehicles because the water discharge of only one foot during high tide can sweep away a vehicle, regardless of the number of passengers.
He appealed to all residents to use the daily weather report issued by the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources as a guide for daily travel plans.
