LASTMA urges media synergy and warns against unverified and defamatory news

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) at the weekend reiterated its commitment to strengthening a transparent and mutually beneficial relationship with the media, urging caution against the spread of unverified, misleading or defamatory reports that could undermine public confidence in government institutions.

The Director General of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said this following the conclusion of an internal investigative panel set up to look into claims published by an online platform that operatives of the authority extorted N100,000 from commercial bus drivers along the coastal road corridor in Lagos.

He said the commission’s investigation clearly showed that the vehicles involved were stopped lawfully for obstructing traffic, in violation of existing traffic rules. He added that all fines imposed were duly paid into public accounts, with verifiable receipts submitted by the affected drivers during the review process. The results, he noted, effectively refuted the extortion charges.

Bakare-Oki affirmed the importance of the media in promoting public awareness, encouraging compliance with traffic laws and supporting civic responsibility. He described the press as a key partner in promoting informed public dialogue and supporting democratic governance.

However, he said this responsibility must be discharged with professionalism, accuracy and strict adherence to journalistic ethics.

While acknowledging the role of constructive criticism, he warned that publishing unverified claims or sensational stories could damage institutional reputations and undermine public trust.
