Lazio’s new signing revealed: Why I chose to play for the Super Eagles over England

Newly signed Lazio midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru says Nigeria’s Super Eagles will make it to the 2026 World Cup despite being winless in their first four qualifying games. Own goal Nigeria.com reports.

The Super Eagles are currently fifth in their group, four points behind leaders Rwanda, after drawing 1-1 with South Africa and losing 1-2 to Benin Republic in the last round of qualifying matches.

Dele-Bashiru, who scored the equaliser against South Africa in Uyo, said that although their current situation does not seem to allow them to qualify for the World Cup, he is confident that the team will overcome the situation and make it to the World Cup.

“Of course, I think next year we will have a full year to work together and we will also have some friendly matches. And when we have the full team back, I am sure we will get back on track,” he told Punch’s online edition.

Eligible to represent England at senior level, the 23-year-old revealed why he chose the Super Eagles rather than bide his time with England’s Three Lions.

“I was born in Nigeria. I left that country when I was two years old, so I don’t remember much about that country. The decision to play for Nigeria is because it is my parents’ country and playing for Nigeria will make them proud. I have a lot of relatives here in Nigeria, so I just want to make everyone proud and that motivates me as well.”
