‘Let’s stop deceiving ourselves, there is no democracy in Nigeria’ —obi

The presidential candidate from the Labor Party (LP) in the 2023 presidential election, Peter Obi, has told Nigerians to stop deceiving themselves about running a democratic government because Nigeria is no longer a democratic country.

Former Governor of the State Anambra who made a statement in an interview on the Aris News Prime Time Program on Tuesday night, said he draws his conclusions with the premise that the standard for measuring democracy does not exist in Nigeria.

“I have said it, and I argue that there is no democracy in Nigeria today. Nigeria today is not a democratic country. Let’s stop lying. If you see all the principles and benchmarks that measure democracy, it is not here,” Obi said.

“Democracy is a people’s government, by the people, and for the people. Today, the government that we have is not from the people.

“It was not by people because people did not vote. It was not their voice. I did not only talk about the presidency; it crossed the line. Look at what happened in Edo. Can you call that democracy?

“This is not the voice of the people. And this is not for people. I just told you that I went to a refugee camp where we had thousands of people. There was no main health care.

“They begged me to have one nurse, which I said I had to be sure. They didn’t even have elementary schools, which I once again said to them that I would make sure it happened,” Obi said.

According to the LP tribal chief, Nigerian democracy, which has been going on since 1999, has now collapsed and was torn down by a government led by Bola Tinubu.

However, he stated that Tinubu was good in fulfilling the promises he made to the Nigerians during the campaign, one of them followed in the footsteps of the past of Muhammadu Buhari, whose government had been widely described as a direction that did not understand and was lacking.

“Tinubu is fine because what he promised to the people exactly what he did; that he would start and continue from where the previous government stopped,” Obi said sarcastically.

“What happens can be reversed with competent leaders who have the capacity and affection to serve. I will make sure to talk to Nigeria at least once every month,” he said.
