Monrovia, Liberia – March 26, 2026 – Liberia’s Joint Security has clarified that the communiqué signed by President Joseph Boakai, Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio, and Guinea’s leader Mamadi Doumbouya during their recent Conakry meeting does not reference any map or border adjustment.

Security authorities confirmed the agreement only reaffirms the leaders’ commitment to the inviolability of borders and Liberia’s territorial integrity.

The clarification follows a controversial map that circulated on social media, falsely suggesting changes to the Makona River boundary.

Reports indicate Guinean armed officers have crossed into Liberian territory for a third time, allegedly advancing beyond the Makona area, raising public concern and calls for stronger security deployment. Authorities confirmed that Joint Security forces were dispatched to the border on March 13, 2026, to manage the situation and maintain order.

Justice Minister and Attorney General Cllr. N. Oswald Tweh dismissed claims about the map, emphasizing that the communiqué strictly reflects the leaders’ commitment to upholding existing borders and does not include provisions on boundary demarcation.

He further noted the discussions in Conakry were cordial, focused on historical ties, shared tribes and traditions, and the promotion of friendship, solidarity, and regional cooperation.

Minister Tweh added that the government has reinforced the Joint Security presence along the border, assuring citizens that the goal is to restore confidence and protect communities, not escalate tensions. “The government has taken additional actions to deploy and reinforce Joint Security at our borders to maintain calm and assure a robust presence in the area. Our goal is not escalation, but the protection of our people,” he said.

The clarification seeks to address growing public anxiety, counter misinformation on social media, and reassure Liberians that the government is actively safeguarding national sovereignty while pursuing peaceful diplomacy in the Mano River region.
