Mayor Councillor Ambassador Alpha Bird Collins is an elected Town and Borough Councillor. He is the current Mayor of Elstree and Borehamwood Town Council.
Hertsmere, UK, May 23, 2025: The mayor resigned from the ruling Labour party due to reasons undisclosed to the public, and he became a member of the Independent Hertsmere First Group, which consists of three independent councillors who are not aligned to any political party.
On 14th May 2025 Hertsmere Borough Council held a mayoral election. Councillor Marc Amron of Independent Hertsmere First Group nominated and proposed Mayor Councillor Ambassador Collins for mayor, while opposition Conservative Party leader Councillor Lynette Sullivan seconded the proposed motion.
Due to the popularity of Mayor Councillor Ambassador Collins, the Labour – Liberal Democratic coalition did not put forth an alternative candidate. With no opposition to Councillor Collins, he was unanimously elected unopposed.
This is the first in history of Hertsmere for an independent councillor and, also an incumbent Town Mayor to become both Borough and Town mayor simultaneously. Mayor Collins is a doubled mayor and has in his possession two mayoral chains of offices.
As Elstree and Borehamwood Town mayor he represents 47, 000 people. But as Hertsmere Borough mayor he represents 200,000 plus people.
According to the rules, Mayor Collins will have to relinquish the chain of office of Elstree and Borehamwood Town Council and concentrate on helping and representing the people of Hertsmere which is a larger area.
This paper spoke with Mayor Collins. He said, “wow, as a Liberian you have made history in Europe! How did you do it?” He responded: “GOD has done it for me! I cultivated the field, planted the seed, made the effort and waited for GOD’S input to make it happen for me and our great nation Liberia.”
