Local golfer Umar claims title at Kaduna golf tournament


A local golfer, Abdulrazak Umar, has delivered a composed performance to emerge champion at the 2026 FirstBank golf tournament held at the Kaduna Golf Club.

Umar returned a clear score of 59 after 18 holes to clinch the title in a closely contested competition, edging out Jerry Linus, who recorded the same score but finished second on countback.

The tournament attracted over 200 golfers from both within and outside Kaduna, with participants competing in multiple categories in what proved to be an enthralling outing for the sport.

In the men’s 0–14 handicap category, Mohammed Bawa emerged as the top grosser, while Jerry Linus returned 66 to finish second, while Silas Saleh recorded 65 gross.

James Bulus won the men’s 15-28 handicap category with a best clear of 84, while Mathew Danjuma and Dauda Bungwon secured second place and best net respectively.

Among the visiting players, Salisu Abba emerged with the best gross with 70, while Safiyanu Abdullahi and Oluche Edwin finished in second place and best goal scorer.

In the women’s category, Kaduna Golf Club Captain, Justina Gideon, emerged with the best gross result, while Rose Nyam and Eunice Pam achieved second place and best net result respectively.

The auxiliary awards also featured prominently, with Israel Adegoke of Zaria Golf Club and Justina Gideon winning the longest drive in the men’s and women’s categories, while Zubairu Danjuma and Vera David, both of Kaduna Golf Club, took the closest to the finish line award.

As many as 210 golfers participated in the tournament, now in its third edition.

Speaking after the competition, Umar expressed satisfaction with his performance, attributing his victory to hard work and preparation.

“I’m happy with the result because I trained very hard for the competition,” he said.
