LP seeks annulment of Imo gubernatorial election in Supreme Court, alleging excessive voting and bias

The Labour Party has appealed to the Supreme Court seeking the annulment of the November 11 Imo gubernatorial election, alleging excessive voting and bias in a lower court ruling. The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, disclosed this at a press conference in Abuja on Monday.

Ifoh argued that despite presenting evidence of excess voting, the party’s application for a re-run was rejected by the appeal court. He claimed that the total number of voters did not match the figures released by the National Electoral Commission (EC), which declared Governor Hope Uzodimma of the All Progressives Congress as the winner of the election.

“The problem is clear. The total number of valid accredited voters for the November 2023 gubernatorial election, as confirmed by the KPU, is only about 500,000. However, the total votes counted to determine the winner of the APC candidate exceeded 700,000, resulting in a vote margin of more than 200,000,” Ifoh said.

He added that his party had raised issues of electoral fraud, including falsification and mutilation of result sheets, harassment of Labour Party agents, ballot box snatching and open vote buying. Ifoh noted that Section 53 of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended) stipulates that any election marred by excess voting must be void.

“We have raised this issue during the election because we have clear evidence of abuse of election practices… Unfortunately, despite the overwhelming evidence of excess voting, both the election court and the appeals court failed to apply this clear legal standard,” he said.

Ifoh hopes the Supreme Court will act decisively and enforce the electoral law, annul the flawed election and mandate a new governorship in Imo state. He stressed that this action is essential to restore public confidence and uphold the integrity of the justice system.
