The Labour Party’s gubernatorial candidate in Imo State, Athan Achonu, said on Tuesday that the Supreme Court ruling on the November 11, 2023 election did not truly reflect democracy.
Achonu stated this while speaking to journalists at his rural home in Umunumo, Ehime Mbano local government area of ββthe state.
The highest court on August 23 upheld Governor Hope Uzodinma’s victory in the general election.
Achonu praised the judiciary for considering the lawsuit he filed challenging the election results.
However, he warned against what he described as an βunhealthy political culture in which the pronouncements of the judiciary carry more weight than the voice of the people.β
LP candidates call for changing the narrative through amendments to the election law.
Achonu said: βI respect the judiciary as the final arbiter in our electoral system, but I must express my deep concern, not out of bitterness, but out of a firm commitment to the principles of justice and fairness that our democracy must uphold.
βI want to assure our people that, as opposition, the Labor Party will be guided by civility, good manners and constructive criticism, cheering the government when it succeeds and rebuking it when it fails.
βTo the people of Imo, I express my deepest gratitude for your unwavering support and belief in our vision for a more prosperous state, while reiterating that come what may, our resolve to serve you and advance your interests remains unshaken.
βWhile this court decision may be disappointing, we will continue to fight for a just, honest and truly democratic Nigeria,β he said.
