Man City fined £2m for repeatedly delaying matches

Manchester City have been fined more than £2m for delaying Premier League kick-offs and restarts 22 times in the last two seasons.

The club admitted breaching Premier League rules by delaying kick-off or restarting matches after half-time on several occasions “without good reason.”

In the 2022-23 season, the Premier League champions delayed the restart eight times, resulting in a fine of £390,000.

In the 2023-24 season, they committed 14 violations, resulting in fines totalling £1.7m, with 11 delays at the start of the second half and four delays at the start of matches.

In its sanctions agreement, the Premier League said the club had “apologised for the breaches received and confirmed that it had reminded the players and football management team of their responsibilities.

“The rules relating to kick-offs and restarts help ensure that competitions are held to the highest possible professional standards and provide certainty for fans and participating clubs.

“This also ensures that broadcast of all 380 league matches worldwide remains on schedule.”

Manchester City secured the Premier League title last season, making it their fourth consecutive season winning the title.
