Manchester United complete Hojlund switch – Blueprint Newspapers Limited

Rasmus Hojlund has joined Manchester United in a deal worth £72million as Erik ten Hag finally gets a striker over the line after a summer-long search for one

The 20-year-old has signed a five-year contract with an option of a further 12 months. Hojlund follows Mason Mount and Andre Onana through the door at Old Trafford as United boss Erik ten Hag takes his summer spending spree to above £150m

Ten Hag had been searching for a new centre forward all summer, with Anthony Martial the only recognised senior striker at the club. Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho have slotted into the no.9 role in pre-season after Wout Weghorst returned to Burnley at the end of his six-month loan spell.

United beat competition from the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid to land his signature after scoring 10 times in 34 appearances for Atalanta last season.

“It is no secret that I have been a fan of this great club since I was a small boy, and I dreamed of walking out at Old Trafford as a Manchester United player,” said Hojlund.

“I am incredibly excited by this opportunity to turn that dream into a reality, and I am determined to repay the faith that the club has shown in me. It is still early in my career, but I know that I am ready to make this step up and play with this group of world-class players.

“Once I had spoken to the manager, I knew that this environment would be perfect for my development; I am relishing the opportunity to work with one of the best coaches in the world. Under his guidance and support I know that I am capable of achieving great things together with my new teammates at this special club.”

United chief John Murtough added: “Rasmus is a truly exceptional talent; he possesses technical and physical attributes which rank him amongst the best players in the world for his age group. Working under Erik ten Hag and his coaches will provide Rasmus with the perfect development platform; everyone across the club will ensure that he is given the time and all the support required to reach his immense potential.”

Hojlund started his career at HUI and Brondby before moving to fellow Danish outfit Copenhagen in 2020. He made his professional debut at the age of 17 in October 2020. During his first full season in professional football, Hojlund struck five times in 11 Europa Conference League matches.
