Newly signed Manchester United striker Joshua Zirkzee has revealed how close he came to playing for the Nigeria senior national team after a meeting with former Nigeria senior team manager Gernot Rohr.
Rohr was in charge of the Super Eagles from 2016 to 2021 and made frantic efforts to get players of Nigerian descent to pledge their allegiance to the Nigerian senior national team, and the list includes Zirkzee.
New signing for Serie A side Bologna, the lanky striker who began his career at Bayern Munich met with the then Nigeria coach in Germany, where he sold him the idea of what he intends to do with him in the national team.
The scorer of 13 Serie A goals for Bologna last season said he met Rohr very early in his Bayern Munich career and revealed what he told the coach, who is now in charge of Benin Republic.
“I was very young when I met with the Nigerian coach. I was about 18 years old and he told me what his plans were with me in the team and I asked for time to make a decision,” Zirkzee said.
“My dream has always been to play for Holland and I am happy that it has finally come true at the Euros, but I am grateful for Nigeria’s approach,” he concluded.
