Many Nigerian leaders deserve to be jailed – Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Friday demanded the prosecution of public officials in Nigeria.

The former president spoke as former chairman of the House of Representatives Downstream Petroleum Committee, Ugochukwu Chinyere, led six lawmakers who promoted the six-year single-term bill at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

He argued that many public officials in this country deserve to be jailed for abusing their positions.

Obasanjo lamented that successive governments in the country since 2007 had failed to build on the foundations laid by his administration.

He said: “So, first of all it is ourselves, yes the system, yes we have to rethink our democracy, but the character of the people in government has to change. With all due respect, most of those in government today should be behind bars or on the gallows.

“The thing for me, if we do it right, whether we have one six-year term or two four-year terms, is we have to decarbonise our brains and our mentality.

“Look, if you give him one six-year term, he can go ahead and still commit the crimes he would have committed if he had served two four-year terms. The only difference is he would have done them in six years instead of four years, and that’s if he doesn’t get re-elected for another four years.

“For me, this is not our problem. Our main problem is ourselves and until we take care of ourselves, if we want, let’s implement one six-year term or one four-year term among others with the same mentality and the same way of working, nothing will change.”
