The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has announced the temporary suspension of three doctors following preliminary findings in the death of Master Nkanu Adichie-Esege, the 21-month-old son of renowned writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
The Board revealed that its Investigation Panel established a prima facie case of medical negligence and professional misconduct after reviewing the petition submitted on January 16, 2026.
The complaints prompted formal responses from medical practitioners at Euracare Multi-Specialty Hospital and Atlantis Children’s Hospital, who submitted written statements and appeared before the panel to provide oral testimony.
At the end of its 25th session held in Abuja on 17–18 February 2026, the Investigation Panel concluded that there were sufficient grounds to prosecute three doctors: Dr. Tosin Majekodunmi, Euracare Medical Director; Titus Ogundare, Anesthetist at Euracare; and Dr. Atinuke Uwajeh, Chief Medical Director of Atlantis Children’s Hospital.
The board then issued temporary suspension orders against the three, pending the outcome of formal disciplinary proceedings. Additionally, the panel identified professional misconduct involving 10 other practitioners affiliated with Atlantis Children’s Hospital.
“These cases have been referred to the Medical and Dental Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal for formal hearing and determination in accordance with the Board’s statutory mandate,” MDCN said.

In outlining next steps, the Board stressed that the conclusions reached so far are preliminary and should not be interpreted as a final decision on responsibility. “The affected practitioners are entitled to a full hearing before the Disciplinary Tribunal, where the evidence will be examined and a final decision will be taken,” he added.
Further hearings before the Medical and Dental Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal are expected to commence in due course.
