Tech giant Meta and music streaming platform Spotify have opposed the European Union’s privacy regulations on open source Artificial Intelligence.
CEO Daniel Ek, who is CEO of both Meta and Spotify, lamented in a joint statement posted on their websites Friday that European Union privacy laws on artificial intelligence were hampering progress.
According to Meta, for example, regulators have yet to create legislation to address how this should be handled, leading the company to stop training its AI models on public data from Facebook and Instagram.
“In the short term, delaying the use of data routinely used in other regions means that the most advanced AI models will not reflect Europe’s collective knowledge, culture and language—and Europeans will not be able to use the latest AI products,” Meta blog post He also stressed that European citizens would not be able to access the latest open-source technology and would instead rely on AI that was “made for others.”

The statement also verifies previous rumors that Meta would not provide its upcoming multi-model AI models to EU customers due to unclear regulatory guidance. As Meta notes, this means that Meta will not be able to use future AI models like the multi-model Llama, which can understand visuals.
Spotify, on the other hand, credits its early adoption of AI technology for helping create a customized experience for each user, which is why the streaming service was initially so successful.
“As we look to the future of streaming, we see tremendous potential for using open source AI to benefit the industry. This is especially important in terms of how AI can help more artists get discovered. A simplified regulatory structure will not only accelerate the growth of open source AI, but also provide critical support for European developers and the wider creator ecosystem that contributes to and thrives on this innovation.” that’s what the post says.
