Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, accused Nigeria media of promoting terrorists and insecurity by highlighting their activities in their online newspapers and publications.
Idris, who made accusations during the seventh edition of the 2025 Minister of Minister’s Press Briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, urged media professionals to refrain from providing indifferent publicity to terrorists, bandits, and other criminal elements that threatened state peace and security.
He stated that giving non -publisity in terrorist activities by the media went far in hampering war against terrorism and bandits by security institutions, noting that the media, as gatekeepers, had an important role to be played in forming public perceptions and supporting national security efforts.
“The media, as a gatekeeper and partner in national development, has an important role in supporting our military morals by highlighting their success and sacrifice,” he said.
“We must deny these groups that they should have been able to take them from the front yard and accurately report them as their criminals, without glorifying their actions or giving confidence in their fake narratives.”
Idris added that terrorist and criminal groups often manipulate media coverage and social media platforms to spread fear, spread disinformation, and recruit followers.
Therefore, he urged journalists and editors to adopt a responsible and patriotic approach to report by avoiding sensational headlines and refusing to function as an unintentional terror propaganda reinforcement.
“This is not a freedom fighter; they are killers, kidnappers, and destroyers, and they must be presented like that,” he said.
