Mixed fortunes for Nigerian teams on the continent over the weekend

Nigerian teams had mixed results on the continent over the weekend.

Edo Queens were crowned WAFU B regional qualifiers of the CAF Women’s Champions League after defeating Ainonvi of Benin Republic 3-0 at the Stade De Paix, Bouake Cote d’Ivoire.

They become the second Nigerian team to win the tournament after Bayelsa Queens won the 2022 edition.

They did it in style, winning all five of their games, scoring 14 goals and conceding just one.

They will now represent the region at the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League tournament in Cairo, where they will aim to become the first Nigerian team to win the premier competition which began four years ago.

Rangers FC on Friday advanced to the second round of the CAF Champions League preliminary round by drawing 1-1 with AS Zilimandjou of Comoros in the return leg at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo to eliminate tough clients Comoros by an aggregate score of 2-1.

They will now face Angolan side Sagrada Esperanca, who knocked out Saint Louis Sun United of Seychelles 4-0 on aggregate.

Meanwhile, Remo Stars were not so lucky and were eliminated from the competition after losing 2-0 on Sunday night and 2-3 on aggregate to Moroccan side AS FAR Rabat.

The Nigerian team had won the first leg in Ikenne 2-1, but in the second half there were only two goals after a series of attacks by the Moroccans.

Joel Beya opened the scoring in the 53rd minute and El Amine Zouhzouh converted the second goal from the penalty spot.

Something similar happened to Maiduguri’s El-Kanemi Warriors Football Club on Saturday in the CAF Confederation Cup first preliminary round after a 2-3 aggregate defeat.

Elkanemi lost to Dadje FC 2-1 in Cotonou after the two teams played 1-1 in Ikenne seven days earlier.

Nigeria now only have Enyimba International FC from Aba left in the CAF Confederation Cup.

Aba Elephant, who were drawn in the first round, will now face Burkina Faso Etoile Filante in the second round.
