Moghalu criticized Nigeria’s implementation of economic reforms

Kingsley Moghalu, a former deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), on Friday cast doubt on the effectiveness of Nigeria’s recent economic reforms, highlighting weaknesses in their implementation.

In a statement released Friday via X, Moghalu acknowledged the unsustainability of petrol and foreign exchange subsidies.

However, Moghalu acknowledged the need for these reforms but faulted the government’s approach in implementing them.

Moghalu specifically criticized the handling of the fuel subsidy removal and the floating Naira exchange rate. He argued that the removal of fuel subsidies, while necessary, should have been accompanied by measures to ease the burden on ordinary Nigerians, such as alternative transport solutions.

He stated, “BBM subsidies and foreign exchange subsidies are not sustainable. The fact that the implementation of the elimination of fuel subsidies and foreign exchange subsidies was wrong is very different from whether or not such reforms are necessary.”

Moghalu criticized the hasty removal of fuel subsidies “without careful planning regarding the consequences and alternative transport solutions for the people.

“My position on fuel subsidies and exchange rate subsidies remains consistent and unpopulist.

“Implementing painful reforms requires the legitimacy of shared sacrifice. “The absence of such sacrifices from political leaders in Nigeria, while asking citizens to endure the pain of necessary (even if incompetently implemented) reforms will undermine the legitimacy of those reforms,” Moghalu wrote.

Likewise, he blamed the floating exchange rate “without first tightening monetary policy and without a substantive Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria with a real plan in place.”

Moghalu’s comments raise important questions about the effectiveness of the government’s economic reforms:

• Are the reforms chosen appropriate to address Nigeria’s economic challenges?

• Has the government adequately addressed the potential negative impacts of these reforms?

• What steps are being taken to ensure successful implementation of these reforms?

The success of these reforms will depend on the government’s ability to address these issues. Effective communication, well-targeted support measures, and a coordinated policy approach will be critical to ensuring a smooth transition and achieving the desired economic outcomes.
