More than 30 killed, 50 cattle burned in tanker blast in Niger

A tragic petrol tanker explosion in Agaie Local Government Area of ​​Niger State has claimed the lives of over 30 people and resulted in the death of over 50 cows.

The explosion occurred early Sunday when a tanker truck carrying petrol collided with a trailer truck carrying passengers and livestock from Wudil, Kano State, to Lagos. The incident occurred at about 12:30 a.m. on the Lapai-Agaie road, about 2 kilometers from Dendo Community.

Abdullahi Baba-Arab, Director-General of the Niger State Disaster Management Agency (NSEMA), confirmed the disaster in a statement. “NSEMA has received reports of a deadly tanker explosion that occurred on Sunday, September 8, 2024, at about 12:30 am along Lapai-Agaie road, 2km from Dendo Community in Agaie LGA,” the statement read.

The crash also involved two other vehicles: a tow truck and a pickup truck. “Over 30 people have been confirmed dead, with over 50 livestock burnt alive. The NSEMA Rapid Response Team (RRT), together with LGEMC, are still at the scene conducting search and rescue operations, as many bodies are still trapped inside the vehicles,” the statement added.

In a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, the Governor expressed his condolences for the loss of life and property. He appealed to residents to remain calm and urged road users to strictly obey traffic regulations to prevent such tragedies from happening. The Governor also expressed his prayers for the deceased victims and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured victims.
