A mother and her five children lost their lives after eating Danwake, a local Hausa delicacy, in Karkari village in Gwarzo Local Government Area of Kano State.
The incident occurred on Thursday, August 15, at the house of Malam Abdulkarin.
A neighbour, Garba Muhammad, told Daily Trust that due to financial hardship and hunger, the widow who was supporting her five children used expired cassava flour to prepare food.
“The consumption of that food caused the death of six family members, including the mother,” the source said.
Among those who lost their lives are Alhakatu Abdulkarim and his five sons: Bashir, Firdausi, Hafsat, Usman and Jamilu.
State Police Command spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, who confirmed the incident on Saturday, August 17, said six family members who ate the food were rushed to Gwarzo General Hospital where doctors confirmed their deaths.
Kiyawa added that investigations have begun to determine the cause of their deaths.
