A group of armed resistance in Myanmar accused the military government in power of continuing to carry out air strikes on the “civilian region” after a large earthquake in the country.
An earthquake measuring 7.7 struck near the city of Mandalay around 12.50 million local time (6.20 in the morning of British time) on Friday while Myanmar was in the grip of a bloody civil war.
The death toll from the earthquake was 1,700, with 3,400 injured and 300 was lost, according to the pro-military government telegram channel, quoting the country’s ruler.
But the modeling of the Prediction of the US Geological Survey (USGS) estimates that the number of dead people will increase to thousands, and can reach 10,000.
It happened when the rescue and assistance efforts in the country had been hampered by the ongoing civil war, which had been raging since 2021.
The National Union Karen (KNU), one of Myanmar’s oldest ethnic troops, said in a statement that the military government, known as Junta, continued to “carry out air strikes targeting civil regions”.
It is said that the strike came “even when the population suffered greatly from the earthquake”.
KNU said that under normal circumstances, the military would prioritize assistance efforts after the earthquake, but instead it focused on “mobilizing the power to attack its people”.
Free Burma Rangers, a aid organization, said that military jet launched air strikes and drone attacks in Karen states, near the KNU headquarters, in the southern country, shortly after the earthquake on Friday.
It came before there was a report on mortar and drone attacks on Saturday.
Junta has not confirmed whether it has carried out an attack since the disaster.
Earthquakes are in areas held by junta troops, but the destruction is widespread and also affects several areas held by the armed resistance movement.
On Sunday, the Government of the National Unity of the opposition, which included the remnants of the government which was overthrown in the 2021 coup, said the anti-Junta militia under his command would stop all offensive military actions for two weeks.
Richard Horsey, Myanmar’s senior advisor to the Crisis Group, who worked to resolve armed conflicts, said that some anti-Junta troops had stopped their attacks, but the battle continued elsewhere.
“The regime also continues to launch air attacks, including in affected areas. It needs to stop,” he said.
He claimed that Junta did not provide much support that was seen in the earthquake area.
“Local fire extinguishers, ambulance crew, and community organizations have mobilized, but the military – which will usually be mobilized to support in such a crisis – invisible,” Horsey said.
Junta violate the forced isolation forced to ask for help from the outside world after the earthquake. However, the country cannot be accessed, it is likely to remain a big obstacle to help efforts.

Junta said the earthquake was one of Myanmar the strongest – While USGS suggests financial losses because disasters can exceed the country’s annual economic output.
While the Emergency Rescue Team has begun to drip into the most devastated area by the earthquake, efforts have been hindered by damaged roads, falling bridges, poor communication and challenges operating in a country in the middle of a civil war.
Many regions have not yet been achieved.
Most rescue occurs within the first 24 hours after the disaster, with the possibility of survival reduced as it goes every day.
