Nafdac intercepted fake malaria drugs n1.2bn in lagos

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has seized alleged fake malaria drugs worth N1.2 billion in Lagos.

The agency said in a statement on Friday that the operations intercepted 277 cartons of fake drugs named Malam Forte in a warehouse in the Ilasa-Eshodi area in the state.

Medicines, according to Nafdac, are disguised as spare parts and hidden in cardboard labeled potassium diclofenak 50mg from China.

The statement reads: “Nafdac has intercepted 277 cartons of fake malaria drugs that are not registered, valued at more than 1.2 billion, in a warehouse located in the ilasa-eshodi area in the state of Lagos.

“Fake drugs, which are hidden in cartons labeled as diclofenak potassium 50mg, are imported illegally from the group of drugs Shanxi Tianyuan in China.

“They are mistakenly declared as spare parts in the delivery container.”

In his words, Director General Nafdac, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, reiterated the agency’s commitment to the campaign against substances below the standard in the country.

“This confiscation is part of a sustainable national operation of Nafdac to protect public health and ensure that only safe and quality medicines are available for Nigerians,” he said.
