Nafdac launched a digital device to overcome fake drugs in Northeast Nigeria

The National Agency for Drug and Medicine Administration and Control (Nafdac) has introduced two digital tools aimed at maintaining public health throughout Northeast Nigeria.

At the two -day sensitization workshop held at the Gombe State on Wednesday, health professionals, pharmaceutical vendors, and patent drug dealers gathered to learn about “Scan 2 verify” and “green book application,” technology developed to authenticate the legitimacy of drugs circulating.

Representing the Director General of Nafdac, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, Director of Post-Marketing Supervision, Bitrus Fraden, emphasized the agency’s commitment to ensure that only certified drugs, examined through strict regulation procedures, could be accessed by Nigeria.

“These tools are designed to empower users – whether professional or ordinary citizens – to verify the authenticity of drugs in real time,” said Fraden. “Any product that does not appear in the Green Book application is considered fake and potentially dangerous.”

The Green Book application functions as a digital database of drugs approved by Nafdac, while scan 2 verify allows consumers to instantly check the status of drug registration through the QR code.

Nafdac also repeated the ongoing clampdown in the illegal drug market in the main commercial centers such as lagos and onitsha. The agency called for an increase in awareness from the public, urged Nigerians to verify all drugs before use and report each suspicious product.

“We cannot win this fight alone,” Fraden said. “Awareness and public cooperation are very important in cleaning our society with false medicines.”
