Monrovia, Liberia, April 1, 2025 – Current Chief of Staff for former President Weah, Lenn Eugene Nagbe, puts the estimated cost of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s newly bought bulletproof vehicle at US$1.2 million. Mr. Nagbe further discloses that Presidential vehicle is specially made and armor-plated.
He addresses controversy surrounding President Boakai’s purchase of luxury vehicles, particularly a bulletproof 2025 Lexus LX 700HR Super Ultra Luxury SUVs, which has drawn criticism here from the public because of their high cost amid serious economic hardship faced by Liberians.
Appearing on OK Morning Rush on Monday, March 31, 2025, he strongly refuted claims that former President Weah took a vehicle, while leaving office. Nagbe clarifies that the car in question is privately owned by Mr. Weah, and was never a government asset.
He explains that in August and September 2023, the government, through the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning (MFDP), procured 15 land cruisers for the Executive Protection Service (EPS), an elite Presidential security force in the country.
“Upon Weah’s departure, these vehicles, along with two bulletproof vehicles acquired in 2022 and a third bulletproof vehicle previously given to Weah by former President Sirleaf, were turned over to EPS Director Sam Gaye”, he claims.
Nagbe criticizes a tendency to blame the former President for governance failures. Instead, he blames the Boakai Administration for current expenditures, including the reported US$1.2 million spent on Presidential vehicles.
He continues that former President Weah does not require any favor from President Boakai, urging the current President to focus on properly governing the country.
His comments highlight growing tension between the former administration and the incumbent, with both sides defending their actions, while pointing accusing fingers at each other, as neither side is willing to take responsibility for error of excesses. Editing by Jonathan Browne
