Nans accused Atiku, Sowore of Interference, warned of political intervention in student movements

The National Association of Nigerian Students (Nans) has increased concerns about what is described as a sustainable effort by leading political figures to infiltrate and disrupt their leadership, warn the serious threats caused by such actions to the unity and independence of student movements.

In a strongly worded statement issued on Saturday by the National Public Relations Officer, Comrade Samson Ajasa Adeyemi, Nans Specifically Named Two Former Presidential Candidates, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Omoyle Sowore of the African Action Congress (AAC), Accusing Them of Covertly Backing Factionalism within the Association.

In the controversy center is Atiku Abubakar Isah, a cousin of former vice president, who is claimed to have been “very funded and supported” to sow divisions among student leaders and engineer the structure of parallel leadership. The association describes this as a calculated effort to hijack student platforms for political benefits before the national election in the future.

“We are aware of the new Klandestin meeting between Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and his cousin, Atiku Abubakar Isah, with a clear aim to infiltrate and disrupt student movements,” the statement said. “A mixture that cannot be accepted in student affairs is a direct threat to Nans’s unity and independence.”

Nans expressed deep concern over what he called “the pattern of divisive political disorders,” accused that this movement echoed past efforts to manipulate student platforms for political benefits. “Our main concern is the role of one of Abubakar Isah’s combat, a cousin known from the former vice president, who has been actively involved in moving factional issues in our ranks,” Adeyemi said.

The statement also touched the alleged support from Omoyle Sowore and affiliates, which showed that this intervention, although different in style, shared shared goals: To compromise the integrity of the student bodies and bend it into the interests of the partisan.

“Nans is not a tool for any political party or figure,” the association stated firmly. “We reject all efforts to use our platform for political games, especially before the future elections.”

In what seems to be the last warning, Nans threatened to mobilize mass protests throughout Nigeria University if the interference continues. He also vowed to declare Alhaji Atiku Abubakar Persona Non Grata on all campuses nationally if this secret action remains.

“We stand firmly to protect the unity and voices of Nigerian students,” the statement concluded, called for the public, the media, and security institutions to monitor carefully and reject all efforts aimed at weakening the autonomy of the Nigerian student movement.

At the time of the press, both Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and Omoyle Sowore did not respond openly.
