The National Association of Nigerian Students (Nans), Lagos State, strongly condemned what described as the “irresponsible actions” of an owner whose “harmful and deceptive petition” to the headquarters of the Zone 2 Police Command, Onikan, Lagos, led to the unfair arrest of a student of the Lagos State University (Lasu).
The students said that the case, which has acquired an initial traction on social media, reveals a model of deliberate harassment.
They declared that the student had previously taken legal measures by denouncing his owner for intimidation and harassment at the Igandando Police Division. “Unfortunately, the owner clearly refused to honor the police invitations and instead exploited his access to the police, presenting a misleading petition to zone 2 with the clear intention of manipulating the police authority to punish the student and silence,” said Nans Lagos.
This alleged manipulative action, according to Nans, led to the “unfortunate and strong arrest” of the student on Friday 18 July 2025 by the agents of Zone 2.
“After receiving credible information from the leadership of the Union of Lasu students (Lasusu), the president of Nans Lagos immediately put in action,” reported the association.
Leadership promptly contacted the assistant general police inspector (AIG), zone 2, Aig Adegoke Fayoade, making “a case passionate for the urgent release of the student mistakenly detained”.
Nans Lagos expressed pride for the result of this intervention, observing that “following this intervention and in collaboration with Lasusu, the student was released on a deposit at about 6:00 the following morning”.
In what Nans described as “a show of rare statistical and professional integrity”, Aig Fayoade personally convened a research hearing on Monday, inviting all the key parties: the owner, the student, his parents, the leadership of Lasusu, the high police officers and a delegate of Nans Lagos.
During this session, the question was completely revised.
In an attempt to support justice, according to the AIG reported, he postponed the case to the Police Commissioner of the State of Lagos for further impartial investigations.
“Nans Lagos praises Aig Adegoke Fayoade for his rapid, sensitive to students and paternal intervention, which not only avoided prolonged injustice but also restored the trust of the public in the police. His leadership reflects a rare mixture of empathy, professionalism and courage that establishes the right example for others in the public service”, said the student body.
Nans Lagos also greeted the “unshakable commitment” of the Lagos State University Students’ Union (Lasusu) for their “timely and decisive intervention”, observing the collaborative effort between the leadership of students and law enforcement as a testimony that the abuse of power will not go into contact.
