NAPTIP Strengthens the Fight Against Human Trafficking with Enhanced Data Collection

The National Agency for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings (NAPTIP) has committed to step up its efforts against human trafficking by promoting data collection and strengthening collaboration with key stakeholders.

This announcement was made by NAPTIP Director General, Prof. Fatima Waziri-Azi, during a capacity-building workshop for NAPTIP officials and civil society organizations (CSOs) held on Monday.

Represented by Mr. Hassan Tahir, Director of Legal Affairs and Prosecution Office, Waziri-Azi highlighted the crucial role of data in national development, particularly in developing evidence-based strategies to combat human trafficking.

“Data drives policy interventions and operational activities in different fields, especially in the fight against human trafficking. Reliable data allows us to identify trends, allocate resources effectively and create impactful strategies,” he said.

The DG stressed the importance of the workshop, urging participants to stay engaged and focused. “This workshop offers a unique opportunity to enhance your skills and train other data collectors in NAPTIP and CSOs. Your role is crucial to achieving our goals,” she added.

NAPTIP Director of Research and Programs, Mr. Josiah Emerole, emphasized the importance of the workshop, aligning it with the current administration’s focus on evidence-based performance. “Proper data collection, analysis, and dissemination are essential to evidence-based programming,” he said.

The workshop aims to standardize reporting templates for anti-trafficking activities, which will be adopted by CSOs and other stakeholders. Participants are expected to reduce training within their respective departments and units.

In a goodwill message, Danilo Campisi, Acting Country Representative of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), highlighted the importance of better data collection and reporting. Represented by Ifeoma Karebo, Campisi reiterated UNODC’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s fight against human trafficking through better stakeholder coordination and data-driven strategies.

The workshop is part of NAPTIP’s broader strategy to strengthen national efforts to combat human trafficking and ensure the safety of vulnerable populations in Nigeria.
