NCOS denied illegal detention over Jonathan’s staff, rejecting the “fake” claim

Nigeria Correctional Service (NCOS), Bayelsa State Command, has issued a firm rebuttal to social media reports that accused the detention of violating the law of 15 domestic staff members of former President of Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Dame Patience Jonathan, in Medium Security Custodial Center in Okaka.

ASC I GT Isari, a Community Relations Officer, released a statement on Sunday rejecting claims as “wrong and misleading,” explicitly denied the accusation that the people had been held without a court since 2019 due to the alleged theft and that a secret meeting had occurred between Dame Patience Jonathan and senior correction officials in Bayelelsa. “These statements are baseless and distributed to tarnish the image of Nigerian correctional services,” the statement said.

Isari clarified that the people concerned were “legally detained by the High Court of 1 State of Bayelsa and had attended the trial on schedule.” He detailed the appearance of their court, noted, “They were present in court on March 10 and 11, 2025, and the latest on April 3, 2025, with the next hearing was set for April 17, 2025.”

“The prisoners have been treated fairly and humanely while in detention, and their fundamental human rights are respected,” Isari added, emphasizing compliance with legal procedures. He stressed that “no individual can be accepted at any custodian center in Nigeria without a detention warrant issued by a legitimate court,” confirmed that all 15 people were accepted through a legal process that was due.

NCO is also trying to convince the public about the integrity of the Okaka facility. The statement confirmed that the middle security detention center in Okaka “remained one of the most peaceful facilities in the country” and urged the community to ignore the “made” report intended to cause “unnecessary tensions.”

Concluding the statement, NCOS reiterated his commitment to his mandate under the leadership of the Acting General Correction Controller, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche. “Services … stay committed to safe, human and legal custody of prisoners and reforms and reintegration they become society.”
