Nearly three years after his death, the remains of former Senate President Joseph Wayas arrive in Nigeria

 

The remains of the late Senate President, Joseph Wayas, have arrived in Nigeria. He died about three years ago.

Wayas, who was president of the Senate from 1 October 1979 to 31 December 1983, died in a London hospital on 30 November 2021, aged 80, after a long illness.

His first wife died 12 days later, but while his wife had since been buried, the venerated politician’s remains remained in a London morgue, an event that had sparked controversy.

The remains of the former Senate President were on board British Airways flight 083 from Heathrow Airport, London, United Kingdom, and arrived at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja at 4.40am (local time).

His remains were received by Jarigbe Agom, Peter Akpanke, family, relatives and other interested parties and deposited at the National Hospital mortuary, Abuja.

Speaking to journalists gathered, Jarigbe thanked the Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu, for facilitating the repatriation of the former Senate President from London, adding that he was confident that the governor would give the former elder statesman a befitting burial.

The legislator thanked the stakeholders’ leaders for their collaborative efforts and support.

The dignitaries have since proceeded to sign the register of condolences at the deceased’s residence in Asokoro, Abuja.

Other stakeholders and leaders present included Senator Eteng Jonah Williams, Honourable Mike Etaba, Ntufam Fidelis Ugbo, Jonny Agim, SAN and Honourable Cletus Obun, among others.
