The National Executive Committee led by Julius Abure (NEC) from the Labor Party (LP) has issued a strong warning to the key party leaders, threatening sanctions against the Governor of the State Abia Alex Otti and former presidential candidate Peter Obi, if they continue with actions that are considered to interfere with party unity.
At the NEC meeting held in Abuja on Monday, party leadership stated that “no longer friendly on the anti-party activities of any member ‘no matter how high it is placed.”
Alhaji Umar Farouk, National Secretary of the Party, reads a communication that states, “NEC in the session in carrying out his duties, with this reminds former presidential candidates from our big parties not to participate in any action that is able to undermine the unity of peace, and the integrity of the party because NEC will not hesitate to issue a more rigid penalty if found.
Specifically, NEC threatened to impose sanctions to the Governor of OTTI if he continued with the planned “illegal stakeholder meeting” scheduled for Wednesday, April 9, 2025. “NEC in the session recorded various anti-party Governor Alex Otti also held an illegal election. NEC also announced the removal of Hon. Afam Ogene as the leader of the party caucus on the House of Representatives, replaced him with Barr. NEC also expressed satisfaction with the decision of the new Supreme Court which confirmed party autonomy in leadership matters. “The Supreme Court warned party leaders and party members to always comply with the party’s constitution,” Farouk said. “NEC noted that Article 14 (4) (b) gave the power to call the meeting only to the National Secretary with the approval of the National Chair. Thus, NEC warned all members to comply with the party’s constitution.”
Abure, in his opening speech, condemned those who were wrong to describe the Supreme Court’s decision. “However, it is regrettable that certain actors, especially Senator Nenadi Usman and Darlington Nwokocha, have chosen to misinterpret the verdict, deliberately misleading the public and trying to produce confusion through the” Caregiver Committee. “Let it be stated categorically: the committee called this is not constitutional and invalid.
He reiterated his leadership. “Let it be known throughout the federation and so on: there is no emptiness in the leadership of the Labor Party. The National Work Committee, under my leadership, remains a recognized and legal leadership body of our party.
