NELFUND explains why students at institutions in Southeast Asia have not received loans

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) on Friday responded to criticism surrounding its disbursement of funds, saying geopolitical zones do not affect its loan allocation.

This comes after the disbursement of N2.94 billion to 19 tertiary institutions, benefiting 27,667 students, and no tertiary institution from the South-East and South-South regions was included in the list of beneficiaries.

The omission sparked outrage on social media, with users expressing disappointment and alleging regional bias. However, NELFUND has clarified that the disbursement process is based on verification responses from eligible institutions, not geopolitical zones.

In a statement, NELFUND explained that it has sent out verification lists to all eligible institutions, and payments are being made to institutions that have responded. The agency urged institutions in the South-East region, which have not responded, to complete the verification process so that their students can benefit from the scheme.

>The statement posted on X reads, β€œIt is important to clarify that geopolitical zones are not a factor in the disbursement process. NELFUND sent out a verification list to each institution that qualified for disbursement. Payments are being made to institutions that have responded to these verifications.

β€œUnfortunately, we have not received any response from institutions in the South East. We urge these institutions to complete the verification process so that their students can benefit from this scheme.”

This clarification aims to address concerns about regional discrimination and provide transparency into the disbursement process.
