Netflix is moving further into the AI space with a potential $600 million deal for Ben Affleck’s startup

Netflix is reportedly doubling down on artificial intelligence in filmmaking after agreeing to acquire InterPositive, an AI startup co-founded by actor and filmmaker Ben Affleck, in a deal worth up to $600 million, according to Bloomberg.

The acquisition, announced on Wednesday but without financial details disclosed, would be one of the largest deals in Netflix history if the reported valuation can be confirmed. The streaming giant’s biggest purchase to date was its $700 million acquisition of the Roald Dahl Story Company.

Sources familiar with the matter said that InterPositive’s total transaction value may include performance-based payments, meaning the upfront cash component could be much lower. Additional payments will depend on the company’s specific operational and technological achievements.

The move is in line with Netflix’s broader strategy to integrate AI into film and television production, particularly in areas that simplify editing and visual effects.

The company has experimented with generative AI technology in several productions, including the Argentinian series “The Eternaut,” in which AI was used to create large-scale building collapse scenes.

Netflix is not alone in exploring this technology. Amazon has begun building an internal AI team focused on film and television development, while Disney has entered into a partnership with OpenAI to explore AI-based creative tools.
