NFF Responds to Calls for Super Eagles Coach Appointment, Set Date for Review

Since Nigeria’s second-place finish at the 2023 AFCON, several candidates have been linked with the vacant head Coach role.

Former internationals Finidi George and Emmanuel Amuneke emerge as the frontrunners for the role, alongside other contenders including Domenec Torrent, who has extensive experience as assistant to Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, as well as Antonio Conceicao and Sylvanus Okpala.

The appointment of a coach before the World Cup qualifiers is crucial, given Nigeria’s absence at the last World Cup in Qatar and the necessity to secure a spot in the 2026 edition.

The latest call came from team captain Kenneth Omeruo who urged the NFF to act fast and save Nigeria’s campaign.

“I really don’t care if the coach is foreign or local,” said Omeruo on Brila FM’s Big Interview. “As long as the team performs and excels, that’s all that matters.”

“We are playing against South Africa and we know they have it in for us; since the AFCON semis. We’ll kill Benin Republic, but again there’s no small team.

“However, the important thing is to act fast on the appointment because June is just around the corner.”

Meanwhile, having drawn their opening two World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Zimbabwe, Nigeria currently sits third in their group.
