In a bid to boost fading hopes of Nigeria’s senior national team qualifying for the 2026 world cup, the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has called on everyone to roll up their sleeves. OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.
The Super Eagles sit fifth in their group, four points behind leaders Rwanda after recent results in the qualifiers, where they drew 1-1 against South Africa before losing 1-2 to Benin Republic. The results led to the departure of Finidi George as head coach.
A new coach is expected to be named for the team next month, but he has already been given the guidelines he will need to follow if he is to be successful as the team’s coach with player selection high on the agenda.
“It is stated in the statement that we (NFF) published. The new coach will look for the best players eligible to play for Nigeria, regardless of where they were born. There are no preferences because this is not the time to show favoritism,” said an NFF leader.
The idea of calling up NPFL players to give the league visibility will no longer be the case. We need points to be in the next World Cup and only the best legs can give us that and unfortunately I don’t think they will be in the NPFL,” he stated.
