Niger: Police arrest 7 suspects in illegal mining and vandalism on government property


Police in Niger have arrested seven suspects for illegal mining and vandalism of government property in Gurara Local Government Area of ​​the state.

This was contained in a statement issued on Thursday in Minna by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun.

The spokesperson said the arrest follows the command’s effort to protect and safeguard public property in Niger.

He said that on March 22, at about 5pm, based on a report of illegal mining and vandalism at Gurara Falls, police officers attached to Gawu-Babangida Division, conducted a sting operation inside the facility and arrested seven suspects.

Abiodun said the suspects were aged between 27 and 40, all from Tsauni area of ​​Gwagwalada, Abuja and Lambata in Niger.

He said the exhibits recovered from them were two water pump motors, 14 carpets, six shovels, three diggers, two pipes and seven lids.

The PRO said the case has been transferred to SCID Minna for further investigation.

Abiodun further stated that on March 17, at about 4pm, a similar raid was carried out at the same facility, and eight suspects were arrested with thirteen shovels, six diggers, among others, were recovered.

The police spokesperson said the fight against illegal mining and vandalism would be supported. (NAN)
