The Union of Journalists of Nigeria (Nuj), the Niger State Council, invited the Governor of the State of the Niger, Mohammed Umaru Bago, to immediately withdraw the order for the closure of the Badheggi Radio Station in Minna in the interest of democracy and freedom of the press.
The union, in a statement in Minna on the weekend by its president, companion Abu Nmodu, advised the governor to approach the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) for compensation against complaints instead of issuing an executive order for the closure of the organization of radio media.
“It is only the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) that has legal powers to issue the license for radio and television stations and can also revoke it through judicial interpretations when such stations errone,” said Nuj.
Nuj urged the governor to put caution with caution in accordance with democratic tenants in the issue of executive orders.
He said that the Council is convinced that the governor would have made an effective use of Nuj as a professional body to cut the issues related to bad professional conductor, underlining the need to bring media professionals and houses through partnerships, instead of ordering their closure which is against democratic principles
The union, however, warned that, as the union will not support the pounding of the media houses by the authorities, the state professionals should always stick to the ethics of the profession to support the trust of the public, adding that “in line with this a committee led by a senior journalist Dan Amshingha has recently been established to guarantee the realification of the Union”.
