Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment for global nuclear disarmament and asked for immediate action to start negotiations on a cutting treatise on the fissile material (FMCT).
The call was made by the Minister of Defense of Mohammed Abubakar Badaru at the first ministerial meeting of “Friends of a FMCT”, convened from Japan on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York and described the Treaty both as a legal need and a moral duty.
This was contained in a declaration on Thursday by the media to Minister Mati Ali
“The closure of the Fissile material gap is the most realistic way to stop an uncontrolled armaments race,” said honorable Mohammed Abubakar Badaru. “The FMCT will reconstruct trust, strengthen the non -proliferation treaty and return the momentum to disarmament.”
The minister urged the international community to translate rhetoric into action, in particular since this year he marks the 80th anniversary of Hiroshima and denasaki. “The memory of Hiroshima and Nagasaki forces us to act courageously. Humanity survival requires it,” he said.
Nigeria highlighted African leadership on nuclear moderation through the Pelindaba treaty, which has set up an area without nuclear weapons throughout the continent. “Africa has shown that moderation is possible. Nigeria now asks the same spirit to guide global actions,” added the minister.
To accelerate progress towards an FMCT, the minister outlined three immediate measures: a global moratorium on the production of fissile material for use in nuclear weapons;
The dismantling or conversion of existing structures in peaceful uses; AND
Using these provisional measures to build political momentum towards a universal, verifiable and non -discriminatory treatise.
The minister also connected Nigeria’s position to the renewed agenda of the hope of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, underlining the connection between disarmament, security and development: “Disarmament is not an abstract debate. Every step we take to reduce nuclear risks free the resources for health, education and economic growth”.
The Nigeria declaration reports a transition from participation to the leadership in the efforts of global disarmament and positions the country as a manufacturer of bridges that tries to align the regional results and global policy for a safer world.
