Nigeria is one of the most hungry countries in the world, ‘Peter Obi accused the Tinubu government of excessive citizens with lies

The former presidential candidate of the Labor Party, Peter Obi, has criticized the administration of Bola President Ahmed Tinubu for economic management.

He also accused the government manipulating statistical data to hide the deteriorating economic conditions in the country.

In a post on the X account (previously Twitter) verified on Monday, Obi referred to a statement made by President Tinubu during the 2022 Presidential Campaign, where the Progressive Congress Candidate (APC) was suspected of rejecting the importance of statistical evidence in public policy discourse.

“In November 2022, while campaigning at the Delta State, the APC presidential candidate at the time, the Tinubu ball, now the president, scolded the other presidential candidate, he was ashamed to say his name, by saying, ‘Na Statistics we went to cut? All I want was to put food on the Nigerian table,'” Obi recalls.

Former Governor of the State Anambra noted that almost two years in the Tinubu government, Nigeria is now ranked among the most hungry countries globally, with millions of citizens who are not sure where their next food will come from.

Obi accused the president of using a misleading economic indicator of underestimating the severity of the current socio-economic challenges.

“President Tinubu is now turning on too much Nigeria with the wrong statistics, from the wrong unemployment, inaccurate inflation data, and now the controversial GDP rebasing, all to place a positive round on our economic and household conditions that worsen,” he added.

He reiterated his long view that governance must be built on the basis of integrity and competence.

“Governance is not a rocket science. This is not a bet. As I always emphasize, it requires sincerity of the purpose, character, competence, capacity, and compassion,” Obi said.

The statement emerged amid increasing public concerns over the increase in food prices, naira devaluations, and inflation surges, which had eroded the purchasing power of many Nigerians.

Economic analysts also questioned the latest numbers issued by government agencies, on the grounds that they failed to reflect the current reality in this country, especially in rural communities and low-income.
