Nigeria on Friday took a bold step towards becoming Africa’s digital trade leader.
This comes as the Federal Government launches a comprehensive strategy aligned with the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) framework. The initiative aims to spearhead a digital trade revolution across the continent.
The strategy, unveiled by Vice President Kashim Shettima, is a key component of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “New Hope Agenda.” The agenda emphasizes trade as a catalyst for economic growth and continental unity, reflecting the goals of the AfCFTA.
He said this while delivering a keynote address at a stakeholders’ summit themed “Digital Trade in Africa: A New Hope Strategy” at the Presidential Palace, Abuja.
“Nigeria is in a unique position to spearhead the technological transformation of the continent,” Vice President Kashim Shettima said in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Shettima highlighted Nigeria’s unique position to lead this transformation. Details of the strategy include:
• Implementing the AfCFTA Digital Trade ProtocolThe protocol aims to remove barriers to digital trade in Africa, such as electronic customs procedures and harmonized digital regulations.

• Developing a Technical Talent Center: Building a strong workforce with the skills needed for the digital economy is critical. These centers will likely focus on areas such as software development, cybersecurity and data analytics.
• Increasing Digital Infrastructure Investment: This includes improving internet access, expanding broadband coverage, and investing in data centers. Strong infrastructure is essential to facilitate a thriving digital commerce ecosystem.
• Promoting Disruptive Innovation and Entrepreneurship:Encouraging creativity and developing a supportive environment for startups will be critical to spurring the growth of digital commerce.
The success of this strategy depends on strong public-private sector collaboration. Shettima stressed the need for synergy between these groups, particularly in the implementation of the AfCFTA Digital Trade Protocol.
This move by Nigeria is a significant development for Africa’s digital future. Whether Nigeria can truly become a digital commerce leader on the continent will depend on the effective implementation of this strategy and its ability to foster a vibrant digital commerce environment across Africa.
