Nigeria takes giant leap in connectivity with $2 billion fiber optic project

As part of efforts to position Nigeria as the third largest terrestrial fiber optic infrastructure on the African continent, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of Economy, Wale Edun, spoke at the Fiber Forward Strategic Development Workshop, organized by Federal Ministry of Economy Communications, Digital Economy and Information Technologies (FMCIDENigeria).

The Abuja workshop marked a significant milestone in Nigeria’s journey towards the connectivity revolution through a $2 billion Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) initiative.

The project aims to extend the nation’s fiber optic backbone by 90,000 km, allowing Nigeria to boast as Africa’s third largest terrestrial fiber optic infrastructure, once completed.

In his speech at the event, Wale Edun reiterated the Federal Government’s firm commitment to ensuring the success of the project, which will drive economic growth, job creation and technological empowerment.

This initiative demonstrates Nigeria’s commitment to bridging the digital divide and achieving a digitally-led economy.
